Mesh
Order in the middle of chaos and vice versa. Within the theme ‘Hybrid’, Mesh translates this mixture of chaos and order into a spatial experience with the 400 metres of hanging ropes. The two sides invite the audience to explore the interplay between chaos and order and interact, blurring the boundaries between the space (as a peripheral artefact) and an interactive medium.

background
For four months of 2022, we conceptualised and materialised an experience based on the collected research insights within the theme ‘Hybrid’ for the annual course event hosted by the students of Media Technology at Leiden University.
approach
Through diverse fieldwork experiences and desktop research, we thought that a mixture of chaos and order- there is order in the middle of chaos and vice versa- fits the theme of hybrid.
With more than a month of experiments with different materials, coding skills and setups, we chose ropes as the main form in the installation to represent chaos and order due to its possibilities of dynamic interactivity.
Along with the form factor, we worked on the details in creating an experience in spaces, such as technical realisation and spatial layouts.
Final Design

chaos <—> order
The patterns on the front side change based on the position and colours of the papers placed on the backside, guiding the audience to freely walk around, observe, touch the ropes and hang coloured papers to engage themselves in this self-exploratory experience.
Interaction Diagram
Key Characteristics
Unique aesthetics from the material, the props and the projection.
Active participation of the audience; various knots were created on the backside
High satisfaction with the souvenirs of Mesh that we gifted to the audience
Can also be interpreted as an upload and download stream of information
