water
𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 stems from a deep appreciation for water as a life force and a reflection on the lack of awareness towards this in our daily lives in The Netherlands. The conceptual framework explores the transformative nature of water, capturing its various states through the interplay of light and reflective surfaces to evoke contemplation on the beauty of our natural resources.

background
As part of a 6-month elective course ‘Lighting Design’ at TU Delft, the team has been working on a project for a light art installation within the theme ‘Do You See What I See?’. The process was conducted in a double-diamond process, encouraging us to diverge and converge ideas to distill the ideal concept. During the ‘ideate’ phase, multiple rounds of experimenting with the materials and lights were involved.
approach
Do You See What I See?
From a broader perspective, we choose the artistic approach since art is up to interpretation; the audience may share the same perspective and their experience with the surrounding water as the artist or not. These discrepancies in interpretation between individuals are how we answer the topic.
Represent water with light
We want to immerse the audience in a captivating experience that visually narrates the diverse states of water—solid, liquid, and gas. Through reflective organza, this work aims to create dynamic, ever-changing visuals that mirror the adaptability and resilience inherent in water.
Spatial Layout
Eventually, the team had to cut down two other sides for the effective production at the end of the process. This led us to focus on the duality of water, representing its power and calmness.
My part: power
As part of the team, I led designing the powerful side of water with light and the fabric. I was inspired by the fact that the combination of a strobe effect and the movement of organza creates a visual illusion related to the granularity of the movement. This is also linked to the theme ‘Do You See What I See?’.
The process involved adjusting the frequency of the strobes, delicately manipulating the fabrics and positioning them in a specific way in the given space for the optimal presentation. The following video shows one of our experiments for the strobe effects.

Key Characteristics
This work was presented at the Highlight Delft Festival 2024.
Two LED lights with LEE filters and the engaging scale model elicited touching responses from the audience.
Learned the skills for lighting design and the importance of lighting on a surface and/or in a space.
